SigloXXI reports that438 murders were committed in January - 205 during Alvaro Colom's last twoweeks in office and 233 during Otto Perez Molina's first seventeen days. The goodnews is that the drop in murders has continued into the new year and thenew Perez Molina administration. Onthe other hand, 9 more femicides occurred in January 2012 (54) than in January2011 (45).
It looks as if Siglo XXI is reporting murder statistics from the PNC but's it's not entirely clear.
I'm not sure that there's any evidence to support this but MarioPolanco of the Mutual Support Group (GAM) said that "It is likelythat criminals are taking a kind of pulse to see if there is capacity to solvethese crimes by the new authorities."
It's too early to project out for the year, but January worked outto 14.1 murders per day. For 2011, there had been 15.6 murders per day.
Again, Guatemala continues moving in a better direction thanneighboring El Salvador where 413 people were murdered inJanuary. That's nearly as many as were killed in Guatemala, a country withmore than double its population.
***The PNC has since updated the total number of January murders in Guatemala to 444.
